Psalms

Psalm 78:1-39
¹Give ear, O my people, to my law;
Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

²I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings of old,

³Which we have heard and known,
And our fathers have told us.

⁴We will not hide them from their children,
Telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD,
And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.

⁵For He established a testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a law in Israel,
Which He commanded our fathers,
That they should make them known to their children;

⁶That the generation to come might know them,
The children who would be born,
That they may arise and declare them to their children,

⁷That they may set their hope in God,
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments;

⁸And may not be like their fathers,
A stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation that did not set its heart aright,
And whose spirit was not faithful to God.

⁹The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows,
Turned back in the day of battle.

¹⁰They did not keep the covenant of God;
They refused to walk in His law,

¹¹And forgot His works
And His wonders that He had shown them.

¹²Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers,
In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

¹³He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;
And He made the waters stand up like a heap.

¹⁴In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
And all the night with a light of fire.

¹⁵He split the rocks in the wilderness,
And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.

¹⁶He also brought streams out of the rock,
And caused waters to run down like rivers.

¹⁷But they sinned even more against Him
By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.

¹⁸And they tested God in their heart
By asking for the food of their fancy.

¹⁹Yes, they spoke against God:
They said, "Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

²⁰Behold, He struck the rock,
So that the waters gushed out,
And the streams overflowed.
Can He give bread also?
Can He provide meat for His people?"

²¹Therefore the LORD heard this and was furious;
So a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also came up against Israel,

²²Because they did not believe in God,
And did not trust in His salvation.

²³Yet He had commanded the clouds above,
And opened the doors of heaven,

²⁴Had rained down manna on them to eat,
And given them of the bread of heaven.

²⁵Men ate angels' food;
He sent them food to the full.

²⁶He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens;
And by His power He brought in the south wind.

²⁷He also rained meat on them like the dust,
Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas;

²⁸And He let them fall in the midst of their camp,
All around their dwellings.

²⁹So they ate and were well filled,
For He gave them their own desire.

³⁰They were not deprived of their craving;
But while their food was still in their mouths,

³¹The wrath of God came against them,
And slew the stoutest of them,
And struck down the choice men of Israel.

³²In spite of this they still sinned,
And did not believe in His wondrous works.

³³Therefore their days He consumed in futility,
And their years in fear.

³⁴When He slew them, then they sought Him;
And they returned and sought earnestly for God.

³⁵Then they remembered that God was their rock,
And the Most High God their Redeemer.

³⁶Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouth,
And they lied to Him with their tongue;

³⁷For their heart was not steadfast with Him,
Nor were they faithful in His covenant.

³⁸But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity,
And did not destroy them.
Yes, many a time He turned His anger away,
And did not stir up all His wrath;

³⁹For He remembered that they were but flesh,
A breath that passes away and does not come again.

Psalm 78:40-72
⁴⁰How often they provoked Him in the wilderness,
And grieved Him in the desert!

⁴¹Yes, again and again they tempted God,
And limited the Holy One of Israel.

⁴²They did not remember His power:
The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,

⁴³When He worked His signs in Egypt,
And His wonders in the field of Zoan;

⁴⁴Turned their rivers into blood,
And their streams, that they could not drink.

⁴⁵He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them,
And frogs, which destroyed them.

⁴⁶He also gave their crops to the caterpillar,
And their labor to the locust.

⁴⁷He destroyed their vines with hail,
And their sycamore trees with frost.

⁴⁸He also gave up their cattle to the hail,
And their flocks to fiery lightning.

⁴⁹He cast on them the fierceness of His anger,
Wrath, indignation, and trouble,
By sending angels of destruction among them.

⁵⁰He made a path for His anger;
He did not spare their soul from death,
But gave their life over to the plague,

⁵¹And destroyed all the firstborn in Egypt,
The first of their strength in the tents of Ham.

⁵²But He made His own people go forth like sheep,
And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;

⁵³And He led them on safely, so that they did not fear;
But the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

⁵⁴And He brought them to His holy border,
This mountain which His right hand had acquired.

⁵⁵He also drove out the nations before them,
Allotted them an inheritance by survey,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.

⁵⁶Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God,
And did not keep His testimonies,

⁵⁷But turned back and acted unfaithfully like their fathers;
They were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

⁵⁸For they provoked Him to anger with their high places,
And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.

⁵⁹When God heard this, He was furious,
And greatly abhorred Israel,

⁶⁰So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh,
The tent He had placed among men,

⁶¹And delivered His strength into captivity,
And His glory into the enemy's hand.

⁶²He also gave His people over to the sword,
And was furious with His inheritance.

⁶³The fire consumed their young men,
And their maidens were not given in marriage.

⁶⁴Their priests fell by the sword,
And their widows made no lamentation.

⁶⁵Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
Like a mighty man who shouts because of wine.

⁶⁶And He beat back His enemies;
He put them to a perpetual reproach.

⁶⁷Moreover He rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,

⁶⁸But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion which He loved.

⁶⁹And He built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.

⁷⁰He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds;

⁷¹From following the ewes that had young He brought him,
To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.

⁷²So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

Genesis 26:1-6,12-33
¹There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar. ²Then the LORD appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you. ³Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. ⁴And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; ⁵because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws." ⁶So Isaac dwelt in Gerar. ¹²Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him. ¹³The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous; ¹⁴for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him. ¹⁵Now the Philistines had stopped up all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, and they had filled them with earth. ¹⁶And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we." ¹⁷Then Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. ¹⁸And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them. ¹⁹Also Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there. ²⁰But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him. ²¹Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah. ²²And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, "For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land." ²³Then he went up from there to Beersheba. ²⁴And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham's sake." ²⁵So he built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac's servants dug a well. ²⁶Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army. ²⁷And Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?" ²⁸But they said, "We have certainly seen that the LORD is with you. So we said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you, ²⁹that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.'" ³⁰So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. ³¹Then they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. ³²It came to pass the same day that Isaac's servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water." ³³So he called it Shebah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day. -- NKJV

New Testament Reading

Hebrews 13:17-25
¹⁷Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. ¹⁸Pray for us; for we are confident that we have a good conscience, in all things desiring to live honorably. ¹⁹But I especially urge you to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner. ²⁰Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, ²¹make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. ²²And I appeal to you, brethren, bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written to you in few words. ²³Know that our brother Timothy has been set free, with whom I shall see you if he comes shortly. ²⁴Greet all those who rule over you, and all the saints. John 7:53-8:11
7:⁵³ And everyone went to his own house. 8:¹ But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. ² Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. ³ Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, ⁴ they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. ⁵ Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?" ⁶ This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. ⁷ So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first." ⁸ And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. ⁹ Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. ¹⁰ When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, "Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?" ¹¹ She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more." -- NKJV
