The Collect

Proper 17
Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
Preface of the Lord's Day

Old Testament Reading

Ecclesiasticus 10:(7-11)12-18
(7 Arrogance is hateful before the Lord and before men, and injustice is outrageous to both. 8 Sovereignty passes from nation to nation on account of injustice and insolence and wealth. 9 How can he who is dust and ashes be proud? for even in life his bowels decay. 10 A long illness baffles the physician; the king of today will die tomorrow. 11 For when a man is dead he will inherit creeping things, and wild beasts, and worms. )12 The beginning of man's pride is to depart from the Lord; his heart has forsaken his Maker. 13 For the beginning of pride is sin, and the man who clings to it pours out abominations. Therefore the Lord brought upon them extraordinary afflictions, and destroyed them utterly. 14 The Lord has cast down the thrones of rulers, and has seated the lowly in their place. 15 The Lord has plucked up the roots of the nations, and has planted the humble in their place. 16 The Lord has overthrown the lands of the nations, and has destroyed them to the foundations of the earth. 17 He has removed some of them and destroyed them, and has extinguished the memory of them from the earth. 18 Pride was not created for men, nor fierce anger for those born of women. -- RSV

Psalm

Psalm 112
1Praise the LORD!
Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
Who delights greatly in His commandments.

2His descendants will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.

3Wealth and riches will be in his house,
And his righteousness endures forever.

4Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness;
He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

5A good man deals graciously and lends;
He will guide his affairs with discretion.

6Surely he will never be shaken;
The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.

7He will not be afraid of evil tidings;
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

8His heart is established;
He will not be afraid,
Until he sees his desire upon his enemies.

9He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever;
His horn will be exalted with honor.

10The wicked will see it and be grieved;
He will gnash his teeth and melt away;
The desire of the wicked shall perish.
-- NKJV

New Testament Reading

Hebrews 13:1-8
1Let brotherly love continue. 2Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. 3Remember the prisoners as if chained with them-those who are mistreated-since you yourselves are in the body also. 4Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. 5Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." 6So we may boldly say: " The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" 7Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. -- NKJV

Gospel Reading

Luke 14:1,7-14
1Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. 7So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: 8"When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; 9and he who invited you and him come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher.' Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. 11For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." 12Then He also said to him who invited Him, "When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. 13But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. 14And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just." -- NKJV
